IAN POULTER

February-March Blog

Hi all, playing catch up here on my blog as it’s been a busy start to the year! (I’m writing this before heading off to the Masters). Managed to get 2 weeks off after my Middle East trip and prepare for the first WGC of the year in Mexico, also my first appearance at this venue.

World Golf Championship Mexico

As highlighted in the media this course is at high altitude so the balls fly further and it takes a bit of adjustments. However, it’s a traditional golf course having to shape shots and I really took to it on first look. On the practice day we had a funny incident where our driver got lost heading to the course. Stopped to ask a policeman, then he saw a WGC logo car so as they say in the movies ‘follow that car’!!! My first impressions paid off and continued my good run of play shooting 68, 68, 69, 68 for a T3 finish – my 4th top ten finish in a row. On the Saturday night along with Rory and Henrick we visited the Black Jaguar-White Tiger Foundation. What an amazing job they do looking after these animals!

I told you one day it would just be me and tiger!!!

I normally play the Honda Classic but with the new schedule this year decided to take the week off as I have another big run of 5 events coming up over the next 2 months. During my downtime I entered and set up my team in the F1 Fantasy league. If you enjoy F1 take a look at the pop up on the home page and follow the link to enter a team in my league to have some fun.

Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard

One of my favorite weeks of the year – had the privilege of meeting the King with Luke a few years back and we have a great picture as a memory. The Monday of the event I was invited to play at the Seminole Member/Guest by Peter Bevacqua, President of NBC sports group. Had a fun day and got to hit balls into the ocean ‘longest drive’ with the ‘shark’ Mr. Greg Norman!
In the number of years I have been invited to play Bay Hill, I had never seen it in better conditions. They installed a new irrigation system and the greens were just pure, running around 13. The whole week has just an unbelievable atmosphere celebrating the achievements of Mr. Palmer and the crowds are just so supportive. My week was not up to my expectations and finished T23. Being close to home I was able to drive in every day. During the week the team @oneshot8541 Porsche South Orlando presented my GT2RS. You all know what a petrol head I am and the color interior was inspired by my design on my latest Ferrari; a Nardo grey Weissack pack (wheels are on back order), it’s look stunning!

The Players Championship

My favorite event of the year outside of the Majors, one I have really enjoyed and played well the last few years. With the new schedule this year moved back to March from May so interesting to see how different the course played. I also started wearing the ‘old school visors’ this week, what do you think?

Opened up with a 69 and 2nd rd. got really hot with the putter (which I re-gripped on the Wednesday) shooting 66 after seeing one of the shot link board showing I had a 40Ft putt and ZERO chance of making it. My caddy was laughing with me and that gave me the power to make a point, putting me in the 2nd to last rd. on Saturday with Jim Furyk. It’s a tradition for the family to join me for the weekend driving across from Orlando so was really looking forward to the weekend.

My experience over the weekend was well documented in the media. The worst part of Saturday was for my kids who had to walk around listening to the comments, real shame in this day and age we still have a few idiots that can’t handle a couple of beers. A 75&76 is extremely disappointing but when you put things in perspective and have little moments like this walking between the 9th & 10th tee with your son,

nothing really matters. No bad comments or abuse from anyone can take away from the special time you get with your children. Makes you realize how special it really is to be a parent and in simple terms being a dad.

No doubt many of you will say I should be able to handle it as a professional. And yes, it’s not the first or no doubt the last time but at the end of the day we are all human and it does just get to you.

School Spring break

Spent the week with the family just chilling and also collected the Porsche GT2RS. Have to say I am impressed! I did a live Instagram from the showroom and a lot of people asked why I choose two different seat colors: red and cream. Well, I followed the colors of the Porsche badge, you all know me very well by now with my attention to detail and design. Combined with the ‘hound’s-tooth’ it looks really shape.

Dell Match Play

Beginning of the week, I dropped into Augusta for 2 days to get some early practice. It really was in incredible condition and tournament ready. The extended 5th hole is beautiful and looks like it has always been that way. And they made the changes in just 6 months!

Arrived in Austin Texas to see I had been drawn with Kevin Kisner, Tony Finau and Keith Mitchell. First match was against Kevin who gave me a drubbing last year in the quarter finals through as you will remember. 10 minutes before the match thought I was in the Masters and then was told I was not but funny how life has twists and turns just 1 week later! Anyway, got off to a good start and beat Kevin in the 1st match.

Lost to Keith in the 2nd which along with the other results in our group on the 2nd day left all of us on 1 point each for the 3rd and final matches of the group. Had a great match with Tony squeezing him out on the 18th to head into a play-off with guest who, yes, Kevin! On the 3rd hole Kevin beat me (and eventually win the event) with a birdie and that was the end to my match play. On another note – great to see G-mac win in Punta Cana after a barren few years. I have been there and know the feeling in putting in the hard work and no results forthcoming and you grind and grind. But what a feeling when it pays off! Flew home to spend the weekend with the family, watch them improve their golf and the 2nd F1 race of the year in Bahrain. Those of you that registered in the F1 Fantasy league no doubt had mixed feelings on the outcome, so close for Ferrari!

Now I have a week to prepare for the Masters, will most likely arrive on the Tuesday as I managed to get 2 rounds in last week so feeling good for the first major of the year.
Until next time,
Poults
